Contemporary Nigerian Artist
My paintings explore the human figure as a site where culture, identity, memory and beauty converge. I investigate the individuality of my subjects, referencing their lived experiences. Through portraiture and figurative painting, I construct intimate spaces that reveals the physicality of the body as a vessel that carries our essence, history and presence. I am particularly interested in the uniqueness and complexities of the human experiences through their own lens. I mostly place my figures within floral and botanical environments. These backgrounds are not just decorative elements, they serve as visual, metaphors for growth, nurture, impermanence, vulnerability, transformation and resilience. Just like people, flowers bloom in times and seasons. The placement of my figures within this lush organic environment is a reminder of the beauty and growth we seek and the inevitable changes that define our lives. The black figure holds an important place in my exploration. I use portraiture to pull in my audience and eventually slow down their gaze to absorb every detail within and around the figure. My compositions allow my subjects to exist outside of confined definitions. Essentially, my paintings are invitations to see and reflect on what truly matters. Through the significance of the human figure and symbolism of flowers, my work explores imagery that projects the familiar in a way that challenges us to ask deeper questions.
